Adobe Flash Tutorial- How to Draw a Cartoon Character

In this tutorial I go over my technique for drawing a cartoon character. This was once a premium tutorial that contained a sample file. Since I have now made this tutorial available for the public, that sample file is no longer available with this tutorial.

@sromag Yes you can, go to ‘file’ -> ‘import’ -> ‘Import to stage’ or ‘import to library’ then locate the file. If you are not sure how to access and/or use the library, then just choose ‘import to stage’ and create a new layer where you can trace over the image or, ‘break apart’ to edit it. You can break apart the image in the ‘modify’ tab.

@JamesBwoii When you select the pencil tool at the bottom right, you’ll see a setting that looks like a squiggly line thingy (usually the last thing in the control panel), make sure that it is set to smooth (an ‘S’ shape) and not straight (a stair step shape). If you hold your mouse down over the box you’ll see a list that opens up where you can select the setting.

@VampireofPhoenix If you double click on the symbol it will open up the first symbol, and since you said you have a “symbol within a symbol” you’ll have to double click again on that second symbol to edit your character. If you made all the different parts of you character like this tutorial, you’ll see all your layers inside this second symbol.

@vzayle @vzayle Make sure you have the “Paint Bucket” tool selected and not the ink bucket thingy. Also, check to make sure the fill color is selected and does not have the line across the square. Hope that makes sense :D . How big is the gap? If it’s too big then none of the “close gap” setting will work.

With the hair issue. What I did was hide the rest of the layers, and make sure the hair was properly closed out as far as there being no gaps between the lines. From that point, I have no problems with the paint filling. The bottom line is just hiding all of the other layers.

Hey chad , thanks for the tutorial . Itz great. But I have a problem ( I’m using CS5 , which is pretty much the same as CS4)
When I draw some of my objects with pencil and then use the paint bucket tool , the paint doesn’t fill my object even those I’ve done what you’ve told me to . ( Choose close gap)
Nothing works :< Could you please help me ?

You should have emphasized that you are using a Mac, because most people use Windows, and if I hadn’t been familiar with operating systems, I would have been very confused.

Were you using the mouse or a tablet to draw the mouth, nose and hair ?

I tried everything you said to. Only with my own char. I saved the char as a symbol, then the symbol within the symbol (another video) and it all ened up on one layer, so now I cannot do anything to it? I am so lost!

The problem with the pencil tool not showing whilst drawing could be to do with windows aero themes on older computers, until Microsoft release an update just put on basic themes and the pencil tool should show whilst drawing.

When I use the pencil tool instead of making it nice and round it makes the lines all straight? How do I stop this?

Thank you very much! Very clear instructional demo & easy to follow. You are so much better than my Flash teacher in Flash class. I learn so much from you in half an hour than sitting in my class for 3 hours. .

Hello. Is it possible to import a picture like a jpg. So you import a photo of someone’s head and then you draw a body?
Anyone know how to import a photo?
